LAKE OGLIASTRO

Lake Ogliastro is a reservoir of Sicily near Raddusa.
The lake was formed, for irrigation and as a water reserve, by building a dam on the long dirt Gornalunga River 830 m.
The impervious core of the dam is made of silt-sandy alluvial material and is anchored to the base clay layer. The project was carried out thanks to funding provided by the Cassa del Mezzogiorno between 1963 and 1972.

The dam was named Luigi Sturzo in honor of the great Sicilian statesman. A measure of the European Union said the reservoir "Ogliastro-Don Sturzo" Site of Community Interest (S.I.C.) The landscape is typical of Caltagirone, with hills planted with cereals.
In the upstream the vegetation is dominated by willows and tamarisks, interspersed with citrus groves. A hill on which rests the dam is covered by a forest of eucalyptus trees. With the passage of time, the lake has triggered an ecological succession process of great interest. Today is the destination of many resident and migratory bird species.
